$1.5 Million 1926 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix Two-Seater to be Auctioned in Belgium

As previously reported, this October, Bonhams|Cars is gearing up for one of its most prestigious luxury and classic car auctions of the year, to be held in Knokke-Heist, Belgium. The Zoute Sale, held during the Zoute Grand Prix, has been a highlight on the calendar for the past 12 years, consistently delivering exceptional results. Last year’s auction was a record-breaking success, achieving a total of €27 million, with notable sales including a 1929 Bugatti Type 37 Grand Prix that sold for €1.15 million.

This year’s auction is anticipated to follow in the footsteps of previous successes, with the spotlight on a 1926 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix Two-Seater. Estimated at €1,200,000 – €1,400,000, this particular car has a rich history, having been in the same family for over 60 years.

Originally acquired by an F1 driver in 1964, the car has remained with his family ever since. Notably, this Type 35 has retained its original engine and underwent an extensive restoration in 2008, making it a highly coveted piece for Bugatti enthusiasts.

The Bugatti Type 35, produced at Bugatti’s Molsheim factory between 1924 and 1930, is renowned for its innovative design and racing prowess. The car’s distinctive arch-shaped radiator and tapered ‘Bordino tail,’ possibly influenced by the Fiat 804 driven by Pietro Bordino, are emblematic features. The Type 35 was also pioneering in its use of cast alloy wheels, a first in automotive history.

Throughout its racing career, the Bugatti Type 35 was extraordinarily successful, winning over 1,000 races. It clinched the Grand Prix World Championship in 1926, following an impressive record of 351 race wins and 47 records in the preceding two years. At its peak, the Type 35 averaged 14 race wins per week. Additionally, Bugatti dominated the Targa Florio with the Type 35, securing victories for five consecutive years from 1925 to 1929.

The 1926 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix Two-Seater being auctioned this year offers a rare opportunity for collectors to own a piece of automotive history. With its documented history, originality, and connection to a famous racing lineage, this car is expected to attract significant attention from discerning collectors and enthusiasts alike.
