In a remarkable moment for charity, the IWC Schaffhausen watch worn by British Formula One legend Lewis Hamilton on the podium of his record-breaking ninth victory at the 2024 Silverstone Grand Prix was sold at auction for $244,000. Bonhams hosted the online auction in collaboration with IWC Schaffhausen, and the watch was the star of the event, fetching seven times its original estimate. The auction concluded in tandem with The Laureus Charity Night in Zurich on October 19, 2024.
The one-of-a-kind IWC Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, which adorned Hamilton as he celebrated his historic win, was auctioned alongside a framed pair of signed gloves worn by Hamilton during the same race.
The prestigious watch, alongside the gloves donated by Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, drew fierce bidding in the auction’s final moments, ultimately raising $244,000 (CHF220,000). All proceeds will support the Laureus Foundation Switzerland, which uses sport to improve the lives of children and adolescents worldwide.
Penny Andrews, Head of Watches at Bonhams London, shared her excitement about the outcome: “Wow, what a night! The generosity of our clients exceeded all expectations, with the spirited bidding in the final ten minutes driving the price far beyond the pre-sale estimate. We are delighted that the IWC worn by Lewis Hamilton during his historic British Grand Prix win sold for such a staggering amount. It’s an honor to be part of this successful IWC partnership, knowing that it will make a tangible difference in many children’s lives.”
The Laureus Charity Night is a key fundraising event for the Laureus Foundation Switzerland, a branch of the international Laureus Sport for Good foundation. Established in 2006, the foundation empowers children and young people through sports programs, fostering integration and personal development, regardless of their gender, background, or health limitations.
