Major Matisse retrospective opens in Tokyo
From April 27 to August 20, 2023, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum presents “Henri Matisse: The Path to Color”, the first large-scale Matisse retrospective in Japan in twenty years

In the exhibition page, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum states that the exhibition has been organized “in cooperation with the Centre Pompidou, home to one of the world’s largest Matisse collections.” This is the second exhibition that the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum has dedicated this year to a master of Western modern art, following the exhibition “Egon Schiele from the Collection of the Leopold Museum – Young Genius in Vienna 1900” held from January 26 to April 9.
“Matisse was a leader of the Fauvism movement at the 20th century’s start”, the website explains. “Thereafter, until his death at 84, he devoted himself to experimenting with bright colors and shapes able to appeal directly to the senses. Unfading in brilliance, Matisse’s revolutionary art continues to fascinate us and strongly impact artists after him. This exhibition will examine all aspects of Matisse’s oeuvre: his sculptures, sketches, prints, and cut-outs as well as his paintings, along with materials related to his final masterpiece, the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence. Do not miss this valuable opportunity follow Henri Matisse’s artistic journey.”
About the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
Founded in 1926, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum was Japan’s first public museum of art, and moved to its actual building (designed by Maekawa Kunio) in 1975. In its “Museum’s Mission” webpage, the museum explains that it “aspires to be a ‘doorway to art,’ open to all people for compelling art experiences.”
