Croatian artist Alex Knapic (Instagram: @alexknapic) has successfully completed his latest exhibition, “Magnetic Art,” at Monaco’s Espace 22 gallery, that ran from July 17th to August 1st. The exhibition featured 14 sculptures and 10 installations, showcasing Knapic’s unique approach to art, blending diverse materials and emotions in a deeply personal way.
Inspired by Istria
Born in Pula and now living in Poreč, Knapic’s connection to Istria is central to his art. Drawing inspiration from the region, he began his artistic journey with mosaics, a technique that continues to influence his work today. Over the years, he has expanded into interior and landscape design, using 3D techniques to bring his ideas to life.
“Istria is at the core of everything I create,” Knapic shares. His deep connection to the region is evident in every piece, whether working with mosaics inspired by the landscape or crafting abstract representations of broader themes.
What “Magnetic Art” Offered
Knapic’s artwork isn’t just about visual appeal; it explores the ties between materials, emotions, and the audience. At the heart of the exhibition stood “Infinity II,” a sculpture that took Knapic eight months to complete. It’s part of his ongoing “Infinity” series, which explores the idea of endless possibilities. “The Infinity series is all about expansion, which can go on forever,” Knapic explains.
Another key piece was “Infinity Expiration Date,” a sculpture that explores the balance between chaos and order. The piece, with its bold red thread connecting chaos above and cosmos below, invites viewers to consider where these aspects intersect in their own lives.
The Balance of Form and Feeling
Knapic’s artworks often take the shape of geometric cubes, each one exploring the dynamics between form and material. His first sculpture, “Cube Zero,” made entirely of bronze and weighing 20 kilos, marked the beginning of this exploration. “Metal isn’t just a material for me; it’s a part of who I am,” Knapic says.
As visitors moved through the exhibition, they noticed how the complexity of Knapic’s cube sculptures increased, reflecting his ongoing challenge to push his work further. “I like to keep pushing myself with each new piece,” Knapic said in one of his interviews.
An Emotional Pull
“Magnetic Art” was aptly named, as Knapic’s goal was to create a connection between his work and the people of Monaco. “I chose the title ‘Magnetic’ because I wanted my art to resonate with people here, to draw them in emotionally,” Knapic explained.
Throughout the exhibition, Knapic was present to share insights and stories behind his creations, offering visitors a chance to connect with his work and with him personally.
What’s Next for Knapic
The success of “Magnetic Art” in Monaco has opened new opportunities for Knapic. He’s already received invitations to exhibit in other galleries and participate in Monaco’s social scene, starting with a gala at the Monaco Yacht Club this fall.
Even after a busy summer, Knapic is already preparing for his next exhibition at the Miart Gallery in London’s St. James district at the end of September 2024. This event will feature his work alongside other contemporary artists, further establishing his place in the international art world.
