The Masaveu Collection, one of the most important private collections in Spain and owned by the Masaveu Corporation, has a large number of works by Sorolla, which stand out for both their quantity and quality. All of them were acquired by Pedro Masaveu Peterson (1938-1993), one of the main promoters of this collection, which is, in fact, the private collection with the largest number of pieces by the Valencian artist, and the third largest and most important in the world, only surpassed by two other public institutions: the Sorolla Museum in Madrid and the Hispanic Society of America in New York.

This exhibition presents all the works belonging to the Masaveu Collection, that is, 46 paintings of extraordinary quality, which will reveal the universe of one of the most outstanding artists in the history of 19th century art, in the centenary year of his death. All of them were painted between 1882 – when Sorolla was still a young man of 19 in the midst of his formative years – and 1917, three years before the end of his career as a painter as a result of a stroke. It is an important selection made up of works of diverse themes and origins, which allow us to understand his historical evolution, and to understand the keys and contributions of his art through the different genres he practised. In this list of masterpieces, there is also a special interest in subjects related to work at sea or bathing scenes, which are so frequent in Sorolla’s production.
